Horn W/Threads At Both Ends
« on: January 06, 2018, 11:13:05 PM »
This one is after a horn on page 182 of Jay Hopkins' book; Bone Tipped & Banded Horns.
It is about 12 1/2" around the outside curve and 10" Tip to Tip. The Maple butt is held in with 5 wooden pegs, it is drilled and tapped 1/2-6 tpi as is the Walnut finial. The tip is horn, threaded 5/8-11, if the tip is removed it will fit in the butt to act as a funnel, although with the concave it doesn't need it.
Color on this one is Coffee beans with some Brown Shoe polish.

Very nice, love those simple unadorned horns

Dang it. Now you have gone and given me something to try.  Nice horn. Anyone would be proud to hang in on their side.

That's way clever.  I did something similar to three of my horns but threaded the one horn tip on the outside and the other two on the inside.  Your work is infinitely better than mine, though.

I am impressed by your work getting that tip drilled and tapped without cracking out that shaped tip.  Cannot have been easy.

The fill plug in the butt is way cool, and similar to the way my great uncle's horn was made in Iceland.  The contrasting color of the screw-in plug and butt work well together.

All in all a really neat work.

Best wishes, and God Bless,   Marc

Beautiful work!

Just my opinion, but I think a dark brown leather strap would look suitable for toting that horn.

The concave base plug is a good idea.  Yours certainly looks good.

Looks great Tim. Simple seeming but tougher than it looks.
