Not as good as a chamber's late ketland is a pretty high standard . I have done quite a bit on a friend's original CVA mountain rifle with a percussion lock of that sort, and it was surprisingly nice internally, well finished and with a bridle on tumbler and a fly. Very different from other CVA locks I've been into. Assuming it sparks ok, i would use it for a slender youth rifle or a pistol, knowing that a modern replacement is available worst case. If I remember correctly, the original Maslin was a very good and stylish lock in it's day.
The Maslin was a nice looking lock but the indifferent assembly and no obvious interest
in quality control made it a problem. On a visit to Log Cabin shop in Lodi,Ohio I saw a
boot box nearly full of them to be returned to the maker.
I was given a fairly large number of the plates, frizzens and cocks by H.C.Hess of Livonia
Michigan and the arrival of these parts was a complete surprise.I called Hess and he said
they were a foundry over run and the foundry wouldn't take them back and the maker
at that time,Russ Hamm had a large amount on hand and didn't want them so I got them
by agreeing to make a very few locks for Mr.Hess.I haven't seen one of my versions of these
little locks for years and wonder if anyone has one.
