Starting My First Kit Gun
« on: January 26, 2018, 04:14:00 AM »
I'm starting my first kit gun.  I choose an easier one to start with.  I've finished three or four "in the white" guns and they turned out good.  I hope that this one does as well.  I hope that I can muster up enough patience and skill to do the inletting that is left to do.

Just remember that you don’t have to finish it up in one night. You’re going to learn more just looking at it than you think. Take plenty of time.

Which kit???    Many "kits" aren't as easy as many would think...

Good luck!   Like stoner said, take your time!

Sharpening chisels, working in good light, using inletting black sparingly, and knowing when not to remove what’s black will get you a long ways.

Just take your time.  I like to take one step each day i work on the gun.  Study again and move on to the next step.  Get a couple of good books, dvd s and review each step one at a time.

I’ve been involved in gun making for 30 years. Just finished up a Chambers York kit for a fellow. Took me 7 days. If you have no previous experience, don’t be surprised if it takes you 3 times that long. Don’t be upset if it does.

Very good advice! You have to pay attention to things while your working. I caught myself doing this several times while building my first rifle. Luckily I caught it in time before the inletting was finished.
