What kind of ramrod pipes for this build?
« on: February 07, 2018, 05:17:35 AM »
Next build is based on RCA 85. What style rammer pipes should I use? Barrel is oct/rd. Shumway says he thinks gun was made in either Berks or Lebannon counties. I am not sure what would be appropriate. The photos in the book don't show enough detail.
Octagon? Round? Thumbnail on entry? Anyone have any ideas?

Merrill Lindsay's "The Kentucky Rifle" has a much better picture of this rifle.  It is still somewhat difficult to see exactly what they are, but it may help you.

So this is the Joh Schneider rifle. Very cool.  I’m guessing a pointed, fowler style entry thimble on this smooth rifle. Something simple for form.  When we look at originals in books we never know what’s original to the gun.  So many became percussion half stocks and on those, fore-ends are artistic re-creations.  This one may be 100% original but as you say the photos show nothing.
