I haven't built a LR that was perfectly flat in the area below the lock and sideplate panels, but do come close......mainly just so that it looks good and isn't bulky. On the BC LRs there's a lot to contend w/ if one is to  achieve the slender look that they're known for and a minimum depth below the panels is just one factor. By the way.....both BCs shown have web thicknesses at the breech of 1/16" and 5/32" at the muzzle......Fred

A high lock placement on BC LRs  kinda  makes it more difficult to achieve a minimum depth of wood below the panels but both the BCs shown below  look good in that area.......Fred
