I've tried with vinegar/barbed wired.  Worked not bad, I redid the whole gun since but here's what it looked like http://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=43694.msg427232#msg427232.  I just painted stripes in several layers then went over the whole thing.

Yes I know... chubby funky look in gun lol

I've never "striped" a stock but from what I've read from a number of sources the stock should be sealed first so the untreated wood doesn't act like a blotter and produce "odd" looking stripes......Fred

Ron Ehlert , striped a stock years ago. He used India ink and a small brush. When he got though it looked like very fancy wood. But he was also much better at art than the average bear!      Nate

I have done artificial striping with inks, dyes, and even wrapped a stock with iron binding wire, and gave it a wash of vinegar, in the past. I was specifically asking about acid based stains that penintrate deeper,  and react to heat. Most stains,or inks, are very much a surface treatment on hard maple. I want something that is a little more durable.

You could always try striping with aqua fortis, with heat.
It goes very deep and is a permanent staining IN the wood.

I was hoping somebody had tried this, so I don’t have to run the risk of messing up a good stock.

Experiment on your scrap pieces or even a stock blank. Find what works best for U.
