GUNBUILDERS PICTURES
« on: May 14, 2009, 09:31:27 PM »
Part of this rifle is  one that I showed before, but it was not completed at that time.   I called it my test rifle for my Midnight Lace Project.  I built it to see if the cherry wood would except the black stain that I wanted to use.  The wood did except the stain,  but did not carve well at all.  As a result I was disappointed  with the carving and went on to another project.

Since that time I have had other thoughts about it and decided to complete it, with the following changes.  First of all I put together a set of 28 inch 54 cal. rifled barrels. The carving was not very sharp, looking more like a worn antique, so I thought I would go with that theme and antique the whole rifle.

The other big change was I built a  new lock, frizzen plate, and side plate  using Damascus steel to give it a different look.  Having done that I thought that I would  also make the front sights out of Damascus steel and tip them with gold.  There is not much engraving on the rifle but where there is I decided to mat out the background, making it blend in with the Damascus steel better.

The bottom line is that I like it so much  now that I may keep it for myself.  This rifle and others will be on display at Dixon's, Gun Makers Hall at Friendship, and the CLA show in Kentucky.

Impressive work Dave. I recently , well currently am finishing up a cherry fowler. My first cherry stock. It was way softer than I expected, and very difficult to relief carve. It just wouldn't carve cleanly, tear outs and breakaways were common.   ...Geo.

Dave,

That's cool, I really like it!  The finish, especially around the carving, reminds me of the stuff you see on antique furniture.  Lots of character in the piece, very well done and can't wait to see it at Dixon's.

David,
Well you certainly got the dark stain you wanted.  The damascus steel and the antiqueing of the steel really set it off.  The damascus escutcheons for the screws are a nice touch.  Looks like a rifle you might find standing in "paps" closet.  I look forward to seeing you and your rifles at Dixon's.

Well Dave, you gone and done it -- you now have the first cut at the early M16 (Black rifle) of the 1700/1800. It was the repeater of it's day. Where are we to go from here?? I think you need to put a grenade launcher on it??
Lovely rifle -- no joke

As always, I love your work.  We spoke at CLA and Friendship about the Black Lace project.  I'll be interested in what decision-making this rifle will lead to.  Am looking forward to Friendship this year and seeing you and the rifle.
