Hawken Bridger Tang Problems
« on: February 14, 2018, 09:51:36 PM »
I am building another copy of the Bridger Hawken with the problem of making a correct 1 1/8" tang.  I wrote about this before, but here is the problem in pictures.  This is Track of the Wolf's catalog showing their Jim Bridger 1 1/8" Breech & Tang.  "Designed by the Green River Rifle Works", which does not seem to be so.  Notice the hump and excessive tail drop.  The second picture is their Plug-JBX-18-3, which is correct for the Bridger and Carson tang contours.  This photo is from their Catalog 16 (current one is 18) and JBX is no longer available.  I just called them.  The third tang is the same one from Muzzleloader Builder's Supply, their number 28830.  It is out of stock and Terry Jo doesn't know when they will get more.  The manufacturer is Pete Allen.  I have the tang but not the plug.  Notice the smaller hook, so I cannot substitute Track's Plug JB-18.3.  The fourth tang is Green River's 1" Hawken Tang.  I don't remember if they used that for the Bridger or had a 1 1/8" barrel on it.

MBS 28830 laid against a photo of the Bridger Hawken, taken at GRRW in November 1975.

My copy of the Bridger Hawken with a 1 1/8" barrel and plug.  I don't remember what kind of tang I put on it.  Must have been Track's, but I don't know how I got the correct contour.  I have cracked two tangs trying to hammer that hump out without enough heat.  Against a photo of the Kit Carson Hawken.

The Carson Hawken with MBS 28830 tang showing correct contour.

The Carson Hawken with the GRRW 1" Hawken tang.

The Gun Works Emporium in Oregon has a 1 1/8" plug and tang but I don't remember if I've had one of those or seen it.  I seem to remember the snail does not go full length to the front.  Does anyone know or have a photo of the plug and tang?

GRRW had 1 1/8" tangs, and the one shown above is actually 1 1/8".  (I couldn't read my own description written on it).  It has the big hook.  That must be what I made my Bridger with.  I had several of them.  So the TOW plug will work with my GRRW tang.  But anyone else still has the problem of no correct plug and tang for a 1 1/8" Hawken.

Herb;

  You are correct about the 11/8” Hawken plug from The Gun Works if I understand you correctly. There is about a 1/4” of octagon plug ahead of the snail on my Hawken set. Hope this helps.

Couldn't you buy the plug with the larger hook and just machine\file\cut it down to fit in the smaller tang opening??? If the pictures are 100%, you should be able to overlay the profiles and get close...then hand fit it with dyekem or dry erase sharpie to mark the high spots????

Sorry, compulsive homemade kinda guy???

Metalshaper, I never thought of that!  It is so difficult to get a close fit to a plug made to fit the tang that I don't think I want to tackle this!  But it is an option. Thanks.

Anyone know of a source for 1 1/8 inch plugs/tangs? I think MLBS and TOTW have been out of stock for a few years, last time I spoke with them, both said they doubted they would have any available anytime in the near future. I am particularly looking for the British Alex Henry style with a drip bar.

Dale, the 11/8” hooked breech from The Gun Works might work. It is good quality, and the hook and tang took almost no refining to get a perfect fit.

Dale, I just got off of their sight. They have English style filler bar style hook breech sets as well.

Deepcreekdale, I have Track's "English "square" hooked breech and tang 1 1/8", unused and I think with a drip bar.  For an English sporting rifle I never built.  If interested, PM or E-mail me.  Herb

Here is Track's Bridger Hawken plug and tang from catalog 13.  This is the correct contour.

It got changed along the way and is now badly shaped.  The No. 13 on top and the current catalog 18 Bridger plug and tang on the bottom.
