Quick question on VA Valley Rifles
« on: March 17, 2018, 04:27:27 AM »
Has anyone who is familiar with southern VA Valley rifles, ever seen one with a wooden patch box lid post 1815? I'm guessing northern VA valley rifles were typically brass mounted and had brass box lids, but I'm not completely sure about that either. Anyway, looking for some help on it.

Thanks,
Matt

I don't remember ever seeing anything I thought was that late with a wood box.

Mark,

Me either, I'm trying to pin down a rifle I have, has some NC features but also has some southern VA Valley features.

If you post some picture that might help.

Curious. Does it have a wood patchbox cover?

John,
Yes it has a sliding wood patchbox lid.

As mentioned, pictures would be good!
You mention post 1815. I wonder why you think it post 1815? Any specific?

I forgot to add that I agree with Mark in that wood PB doors were generally long gone by 1815. Mostly gone by 1790-ish I'd think.

Now, some ol' geezer (like me) might have had a gunsmith make him one at a late date, just because that's what he liked.  ;)
