Absolutely beautiful job! Your brother is one lucky guy and I know this will be his most prized possession. I love all you did with this rifle and your carving is fantastic. Congratulations on a job well done.

The finish looks really good.  What stain do you use? It's refreshing to see a stain that does not cause grain reversal.

I just used a dilute solution of AF with three coats of Tried and True on top.    However, the stock was well burnished with a lt gray ScotchBrite pad before and after staining.   That was after whiskering at least three times with a very sharp scraper.   I paid particular attention to scraping right up to the edge of the carving to get rid of the roughness where I stamped the design.     The surface isn't going to get any better after you apply your final finish.

Grain reversal, I'm looking on google to find a good picture to illustrate.  It happens when you apply a dark stain to light colored wood.  More noticeable on soft woods like pine or spruce but can happen on hard woods like maple also.   White wood consists of light colored grain and denser dark grain lines as in the left picture,  but when you apply a dark stain the light wood turns dark and the dark wood looks light in comparison because the dark stain absorbs more into the less dense white grain and not so much in the dark dense grain. You can see it in some maple gun stocks that have a dark stain.  On maple it's not as noticeable because the dark lines are thin to begin with but it happens.
