Powders?

I have been shooting these things for about 45 years and have tried every different brand that came my way during this time. These include DuPont, GOEX, Curtis & Harvey, Elephant, Schuetzen, Swiss, and probably a couple more. My all-time favorite was the Green River black powder made by Western Technology, Roosevelt, Utah, back during the 1970's. Wonderful stuff....clean, consistant, and hot. Their powder works blew up , with the loss of several lives, and was never rebuilt. I still have a couple of unopened pound cans of it.  The closest thing I've used since has been the Swiss.

Daryl, I'm beginning to get the impression that you don't wipe between shots...

Well, William - I do actually wipe between shots, just not with a separate patch or patches - the patch around the ball does the wiping - right to the bottom of the grooves.  ie: .395" ball + .0215 patch + .0215 patch = .438".  .398 bore diameter + .012 land depth + .012 land depth = .422".  This leaves me with .016" compression in the grooves, .008" per side, which seems to work.  My .395" mould casts .397", so the combination comes out a bit tighter than the numbers I provided.  Too, if calipers are used, the .0215" denim patches run .024" thick.  I find this to be quite easy to load.

I've a variety around of different makers and granules...shoot different in each rifle.
I like the Swiss powder, use it in the .50 caliber, the .54 I use Goex Cartridge Grade and the little .40 longrifle gets 3f Goex ran through her. Course she's taken as many critters using Graf powder as Goex but Goex is my preference I guess.

Shot 20 shots today with 3F Lidu 25 & 50 yds. POI was the same as Goex 3F and maybe slightly cleaner. Needs more testing but maybe a cheaper alternative?
