The easiest way I've found to cut piano wire is with a cut-off wheel on the ever popular dremel tool. I also use the wheel to taper the entry end of the pin and round it.

I have always used drill rod stock from brownells. If I drill with a # 49 drill bit a piece of #49 drill rod fits smoothly without binding. It is easy to cut and shape the ends ( it is unhardened as it comes) once I get them sized I harden them.
I usually buy sizes 50 ,49 & 48. They seem to work for all my pinning

Well, it did come out without any hassle.  Next time I'll try to add to the tang if it isn't long enough.  That way it will go in the lock cavity.  Still all these tips are great, so thanks.  That is what I like about this site.  We all get more ideas than we count on.
