My Recent addition, but need ID.
« on: March 31, 2018, 07:34:14 PM »
Recently acquired this early flintlock long rifle, that I believe is 1700,s. No makers mark, but some identifying items in the build. Thought some one here might be able to help ID the gun. 42" barrel, 45 cal, 62" overall. I thought the toe plate was pretty unique, & may ID maker. Thanks, Jim.

I added a few more pictures. Thanks for the responses, I'm learning.
The lock appears to have a name on it. Five letters, middle looks like an "X", maybe Dixon? Trying to get a picture. Anyone in Michigan that I could show this rifle to?

From the amount of crescent on the butt plate and the width,  I'd say closer to 1820's or 1830's. Probably western PA near Somerset Co. or could make an argument for Reading  area.

I agree with Nate.
The side plate doesn't appear to be original, and judging by the filed hole, I doubt the lock is either. But lot's of guns have had the locks replaced, and wouldn't make much difference here.

Some better pics would be nice. I see a wear plate under the forearm and a inlay along the top of the comb as well, and it would be nice to see these.

Thanks for posting the pictures,
John

Here is a picture of comb, & letters on lock. Can't quite make them out, but there are five letters. Tried to turn them into Siler, or Dixon, but just guessing.
