Fastest fowler/tradegun locks???
«

Any experience/suggestions for fast locks suitable for these smoothbores would be appreciated.
In the case I would be interested in a smooth rifle build, what rifle locks are known to be among the fastest?
Thanks for your help, Skychief

Skychief,
You've bin told! For altogether reliable and fast, Chambers R-faced English, Virginia, and Early Ketland.
For a later style build, Chambers late Ketland and runner up L&R Durs Egg for sparks.
There.

Take a look at Larry Pletcher's data in Muzzle Blasts. The fastest lock he timed was an original Manton. The data are fairly old, and do not include the more recent Chambers locks that Pukka mentioned. He likely has data on the newer locks. Perhaps he will update his original article someday.

For large locks I find Chambers early ketland the fastest.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

The smaller locks are generally said to be a bit faster than the larger locks. I have Chambers locks ranging from the Late Ketland on up to the Colonial Va lock. It's beyond my ability to tell much of a difference among them; I know there is a difference but I can't detect it.
