Today I finished my Fowler rifle on scale. As I told in my last post the walnut has a very open structure, so it splinters very easy.
I had in my mind to make silver inlay, but with this wood I do not think it will work as I want.
I am happy with the result as it is now.

Some details!

The tip of the ramrod is made of horn.

Dave,

You asked for the grey finish on the barrel.
I used 3M Tri-M-ite Frecut sandpaper P320.
I use it for the barrel and the lock. For me it gives a nice satin look.

That fowler is at once beautifully crafted and mind-boggling (due to the scale). That is quite an accomplishment.

Im curious as to the actual length of pull and overall length. I tried taking standard dimensions times .4 but got goofy numbers.
I’m especially interested in the weight. I think this is a gun my messed up shoulders could carry all day.

Here a drawing on real scale of Track & Wolff, that I used.
I placed my rifle on scale on it, so you can see the difference.
The weight is around 500 gram. I do not no the weight of an English Fowler on full scale.

I am still thinking of what to make next, but I think I am going to use maple.

That answers all my questions. My (X .4) numbers now don’t seem that wrong. And 500 grams (1.1 pound) !!! I love it.

that fowler turned out very nice! You did a wonderful job on it.

I had the pleasure of seeing this fowler in person before it was finished, I am not surprised that it turned out so well.

How about a Colonial period (pre Revolution) rifle next Adrie?
