"Leatherwork and More" - new class for 2018
« on: July 24, 2018, 09:59:50 PM »
Maryellen Pratt and Jeanne Mcdonald have revamped their two day leatherworking class from previous years to include a much wider variety of new project choices for students. The offerings have been expanded to include more leatherworking possibilities along with haversacks and woven straps. From the Southern Ohio Artisan Workshops website:

In this two day class, leatherworkers Jeanne MacDonald and Maryellen Pratt will guide you through the making of your choice of a variety of projects including traditionally styled hunting pouches, properly fitted knife sheaths, haversacks, or inkle loom woven straps. Other projects may be possible pending instructor approval. Techniques including material selection, design, layout, finishing and a variety of stitching and weaving styles will all be covered.

It is well known that attending classes like these can save a beginner countless hours and help him or her achieve much better results in a shorter time. The unsolved problems and unanswered questions that many students have are soon resolved, and the bad habits that beginners typically develop are replaced with good technique. But one of the things not considered by many who have not attended classes like these is the unexpected knowledge that is gained by simply being there. Usually there are many different types of projects being worked on, and by simply listening and joining in on discussions everybody in class can benefit from the individual instruction that each student receives.

A few photos from last year's class showing student work in progress.

Last year's class focused on the making of leather pouches and knife sheaths. This year Maryellen and Jeanne will continue to teach these items and have added haversacks, woven straps and other leather items to the list of possible project choices.

Woven straps by Maryellen Pratt. Straps like these are often made into horn or pouch straps, gun slings and leg ties and can be made in a variety of colors and sizes.
