For some time, we've been wanting to start producing some Youtube videos.  We've been quite busy and I've always found an excuse not to until now.  It's certainly not my favorite thing to do and I refuse to watch myself, but I do recognize their value.  So if your interested in information pertaining to the assembly of our Colonial Rifle Kit, check this out:



Some of the information is specific to our kit, but some can be applied to longrifle building in general.  We've shot a lot of video the last couple days, so many more will be coming soon.  I know the quality isn't the greatest, but our thought is that the information shared will be a good thing regardless.  Upcoming videos will deal with further details of kit assembly as well as other general aspects of our craft.

Your did very well in your video Jim so don't sweat being in front of the camera. Quite informative, enjoyed watching you work. Thumbs up!

First time builders: Note the sharp tools, that is the way they should cut. Note also that your marking medium of choice will show color long past the time that you should quit removing wood, cut to improve the fit and check often, then stop. If you're having trouble or something seems wonky but you can't figure it out - stop, come back to it after some down time a some thought.

Thanks for your efforts in providing the video that is well done on starting the assembly of your rifle kit.

Would you provide the source of the "Custom Blue gel" if I understood the product name correctly, that you used in the video for inletting purposes, I would be most grateful. I would like to try that product for inletting as a comparison to some of the other products that I have used in the past.

Questions are a good thing...  As to the blue transfer color, I'm not sure exactly what it is.  My father was a tool and die maker and I found a can of this stuff in one of his boxes after he passed away.  The can is probably 25 years old.  I'm sure it's a spotting compound used in the trade.  May very well be the product which has been shown.  I will note, that the consistency is pretty thick, more like a very heavy grease.  I think I recall seeing some of the Permatex product in the past and it seemed a little thinner.  Other transfer methods work well too and I've used different ones in the past.  Might be a good subject for a more in depth video!

Jim - my father used Prussian Blue, which was watery-thin iirc 55years ago. He used it in making parts of or from steel plate, so the scribe would make a nice line.

Using it for wood work is obviously a very good usage as well.

I think you might be thinking of blue Dykem, but I might be mistaken.  The stuff I use for transfer color is very thick.  A paste more or less.  Dykem is very handy for layout work in gunbuilding, though.

Tks Jim, that could be, however it might also be he mixed a thick paste with alcohol, painted it on, then let the 'thin film' dry.

Thank you for this instructional video (and the other follow-up videos.) While I'd love to attend an actual class, I have responsibilities that currentlymake that very difficult.
I am especially critical of my own abilities (perhaps too much ), and your videos have provided the confidence to buy one of your kits, knowing this is something I can do.
