Circassian Walnut Burl and Sterling Silver Powder Flask
« on: October 24, 2018, 08:33:33 PM »
This powder flask is a project that I recently completed.I considered it an honor to be asked to collaborate with Ron Scott on this Circassian Walnut Burl and Sterling Silver Powder Flask. It is to be paired with a Jaeger that Ron is making for a client.Ron supplied the turned burl flask that he turned from his inventory of beautiful  Circassian  Walnut.Ron did a stellar job with the turning as the sidewalls are barely 3/16" thick.I did the silver work.It was quite nerve wracking to working on something so special that someone else had made. I cast the main body of the spout and then fabricated and assembled the the rest.It was a fun and challenging project!!

That is truly beautiful. The silver work really complements the Wood work.

Best regards

Very fine work Mitch. It would look right at home in the British Museum or Wallace Collection in London!

Does the silver-work on the flask reflect design elements from Ron's jaeger?

Thanks everyone for the kind words they are appreciated!!!

Carl Young

I was given a photo of an original flask to base my work on.I've not seen the Jaeger but perhaps at some point Ron will post photo's of the Jaeger and it's accoutrements.

aaronc

I will try and remember to take photo's the next time I do something like this. It's hard sometimes when you get caught up in a project to remember to stop and take photo's!!! Thanks for the interest!!

Not really a tutorial but maybe helpful.....

First I turned a pattern and cast it(and a spare) in delft clay....

Then I cleaned up the casting ,drilled and threaded it and made the stopper.

Then out of 18 gauge silver I made the lower moldings after making a brass pattern to my drawing.

Then I silver soldered the two best moldings to form a cone

Then I silver soldered everything together and finally nailed onto the wood flask.

Hope this helps !!!

Mitch,..
everything helps. I've never worked silver before and this is great info. It's a fantastic skill to have in my opinion when delving into this 18th century art,..possibilities are about endless but yet still period correct. Thanks for posting! -Aaron

This is definitely the caliber of work to aspire to achieve some day. Thank you for sharing the description along with the photos of your procedure. Now to find someone who can and is willing to teach a bit of silversmithing to me.
