Hawken squirrel rifle pics
« on: August 21, 2018, 06:13:01 PM »
Hi Folks, I am looking to gather info and pics for a over the winter build of a Hawken squirrel rifle.
I am especially interested in the varaitions in breech, plug, tang areas, and the gun in general.
I must be a Hawken addict, between SMR long flinters and Hawken guns,I haven't built a brass mtd gun in several years. Grandsons silver flinter excepted.
Thanks for any help, as always,
best regards, Dave f 8) 8)

Get a holt of Don Stith, he knows all about those things.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Here's a link to a Don Stith Squirrel Rifle built by KL Moors in 2011: http://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=15337.0

Here's a link to Don Stith's Squirrel Rifle site:   http://www.donstith.com/deluxe_squirrel.html

Here are some antique Hawken squirrel rifle photos that I've gathered over the years:

.45cal x 32 in. barrel

Here are 2 very similar Hawken squirrels:

This one is by JP Gemmer, .40 cal x 40 in. barrel

This one is a S. Hawken (barrel stamped) full stock, .43 cal x 39 in. barrel:

Note that all the trigger guards are very different from what we think of a typical Hawken rifle.  Anyway that should give you something to chew on.

Last time I was at the Davis Firearms Museum in Claremore OK. , There was a Hawken squirrel rifle on display. You may check with them for info.
