Kibler Colonial Kit Finished

 Here is a couple of pictures of a Jim Kibler Colonial kit I assembled. It's a very nice kit that's fairly easy to assemble. I still haven't built up the nerve to try and decorate a rifle with carving and moldings yet so it's just a plain rifle. Lucky for me the rifle is beautiful without the extra décor! I used black trans tint and aqua fortis for the stain then finished it with chambers oil followed by a couple coats of BLO. Not much else to mention other then I did go one upgrade level with the wood which really had some nice figure. Tony

Sure looks nice to me, love the color. Explain more about this "black trans tint".

 I basically dye the stock black using trans tint dye then gently sand it back with 320. The figure will hold some of the black tint and give more contrast when you do the aqua fortis. I found some videos on youtube of this process by guitar builders. I do think its similar to using the tannic acid.

Looks very nice. I am tempted to try one of these kits. I just started build #2 from a blank.

Did you do any finish work to the lock, or is that how it came other than browning it?

  Thanks. The lock is as it came, there was no need to do any additional work to it.

Good job!  I just got mine this past Monday, and intend to go plain also.  I was thinking of a barn gun kind of look and ordered it with a cherry stock.  The only mod that I was considering was to thin the wrist area down slightly.

Nice work!  Looks great, and I really like that finish. 

I'm building one for a friend.  The kit is assembled as of yesterday.  Still planning out my carving, and will practice it first...

Yours is a good example of how good it can look without embellishment.  Makes me think I should tame down my plans for mine.

Personally, I think you did a good job on the lock panels, true to the period; as others have mentioned i'm sure, carving  is not common on most early rifles...so overall a very nice rifle. All in all nicely done and the finish is great...sometime thats the hardest part to get right!
