« on: May 20, 2009, 10:00:22 AM »
I'm trying to find some info on an original caplock marked Kingsland & Co., Warranted.
When in business especially????

Thanks for any help.......so far my references have come up nil.......

Chuck, I'm on the same quest.  I have a Southern rifle with a flintlock marked  "R. Kingsland & Co., Warranted". and I and the previous owner have looked for information on this lock for years.  Hopefully, someone can help shed light on this lock maker.

Its probably an importer or hardware store name, not the actual maker.
The locks came over in bulk from various places. Birmingham for example, they were stamped either by the maker with the specified markings or by the person that bought them for resale.
So stop looking only for a maker and start looking for a supplier of parts, hardware store or importer.

I have a late half stock target rifle with a lock marked Kingsland Warranted and tried to run the traps on the maker and didn't get far.  I did see one of these locks on one of the original Hawken rifles in the Cody museum.  I know it was used around 1860, but do not have any additional information.

You are right, it is most likely the importer/distributor's name. Don't know why I said "maker", I know better!

Anybody have that 5 volume set on NY gunmakers?  Would be interesting to know if there's anything more in there.

I checked out the New York State Firearms Trade books but found no listings for Kingsland.
Frank Sellers "American Gunsmiths" lists "Kingsland, R. & Co., unlocated. Lockmaker, flintlocks".
