better ignition
« on: September 10, 2018, 12:49:07 AM »
I have an old barrel that has a new .40 cal. liner put in it .It has just a .060 hole for the touch hole and the ignition is not to good . the wall thickness is .300 . my question is what size of white lighting liner is best to use ? Thank you for staying on the subject and giving me your opinion . I appreciate it very much.

Depending on the breech diameter of your barrel, a 1/4" x 32 or a 5/16" x 32 Chambers' White Lightning vent will serve you well.  I like the inside cavity diameter of the 5/16" liners.  Your ignition will be simultaneous with trigger pull, or nearly so.

I’ve always found the 1/4 in to be as fast as any other that I can tell, so that’s what I use as a rule.
You can always go bigger but you can’t go smaller.

I've used the 1/4 and the 5/16.  The latter seems to give better performance all around.

I agree with Dan, I have a couple of each, and the 5/16ths seem faster, and less prone to plugging up with fowling. You have pretty much painted yourself into a corner with one of these, since the next step up, if you mess up, is to make one yourself.

Eric, welcome back! What size threads does the current liner have?

I can't prove it, but the biggest white lightning liner safe to install in a barrel seems to be faster.

Chambers also makes a 3/8" White Lightening liner for larger barrels, so there is one step up from 5/16, if your barrel has room for it.

took my old rifle out today ( the one with a new 5/16-32 white lighting touchhole liner ) and tried to shoot some spiders with it ,came close but still need some sight adjustments, with Bobby Hoyt redoing the barrel and new  touch hole liner it is going to be a good shooter. went back in the woods to see if I could get a tree rat or two ,didn't see any, but saw five nauga's  first time in a long time seeing them . they sure took a hit back in the 60's and 70's with the car companies using their hides for car seats . have any of folks seen any in your neck of the woods?

Ya got to love them naugas.  Come in every color of the rainbow!
I think they are recovering from the '70's and '80's!

You better get them naugas tested for CWD by the DNR lab!

We even had some of those rare metalflake naugas in this area, but I haven't seen any since the late 1960's. Probably extinct, I suppose.

I think that the metalflake nauga's were actually undocumented nauga's that crept in.

No naugas, but the annual mucket migration was spectacular this year. It's remarkable how those little furry critters just roll along and don't use their feet!

the rumble seat. The driver's seat was fine denim and burlap.NO joke,it was.

The late and still missed Tom Dawson told me and others that,"You can have the finest and
fastest lock ever made by the best craftsman" and still lose its advantage at the vent.He had a
Manton 16 bore rifle and it was as fast as a caplock and I saw and shot this gun myself.
I don't know if it's still in his family or not but I hope so.

I tend to think that the larger size touchhole inserts would generally give a more positive ignition.  That cavity allows more of the powder to be closer to the ignition hole.
I didn't know that Chambers made a 3/8" size - good stuff to know for when I build a .54 or larger rifle.  I am currently using the 1/4" size on my .45 flint.
And those naugas are really fast lil critters!  Thinking of using a 20-gauge on them.  Or maybe I am just getting older and moving slower??

Selecting the vent diameter will be limited to how wide the side flat is on the barrel.  I have used Chambers' 3/8 x 32 liner on a Brown Bess and a couple of trade guns.  With guns such as there when the barrel wall is quite thick, the bigger liner brings the charge closer to the pan.
