Could use some help with a drilling mishap

So i had my 1/16th in drill bit to deep in the drill and mared the forearm.  I dont want to take of any more wood if i xan avoid it. Any suggestions?

You could inlet a plate for the pin to go through on all the pins or just the one rear one.

Could put an inly ove it. Seems I have seen this before. Center drill your inly, and place over pin, inlet into stock. Might want to do the same on other side. lol.Welcome to the forum. Dave

Remove the barrel.  Soak  and I mean soak the area with plain water.  Then hold a steam iron over it as long as you can.  You may have to do this several times but most if not all of that grain will swell.

I have removed some pretty bad pressure dings that way.

I just had a similar mishap on my latest build.  I used a soaking wet cloth and an old (copper) soldering iron to steam it out.  It took a couple of attempts to get it all flush.

Water alone will cause raw wood to swell back to it's original state. Before you go with the steam, just "slop" the dent up with water. Don't do the entire side.....maybe a dime size at most. That little indentation will hold water via laying the stock on it's side.

I drilled my trigger guard rear pin and when I took the stock away from the drill press.....I put a good inch long grove in it from the drill bit.  I watered it two or three times. It's no longer there.

It is, after all a really old way of "standing up" dents.

I’ve used this small hobby iron on quite a few Krags, 03’s fand m1 garand stocks.  I soak the $#@* out of the area, lay a wet rag over the dent and press the iron on the rag.  You can normally raise it quite a bit.  I did the same thing on my lock panel drilling the rear bolt.  It won’t steam out.

 A dent will steam out. Wood that has been removed such as the case you are showing will not steam out.  You can raise the wood but when it dries the hole will be there again. Fill the spot with thick super glue, when it dries good sand it flush. After the finish is applied it will be very hard to see.  If you intend to stain the gun, Stain that area before you fill it with the super glue.
 Dents steam out. Holes do not steam out.

Jerrywh is right. I though we were looking at a dent where you "smashed" the drill chuck into the stock. Wood "pushes" will come out. Wood cuts won't.

So, if it's a push.....water.....if not.....go with what the experts say!!

I also thought it was a dent.  This is just a thought, I'm no expert.  Once you do the trick with superglue above, you could antique it with black spray paint or whatever you use and make it unnoticeable.  Just don't rub back as much in that specific area.

I'd do a small inlay on both sides maybe on all the barrel pins but I would just do this one first to see how it looks but before I inlet it I would drill for the pin on the inlay and slide the inlay onto the pin to get a look at it - if it looks good then inlet it.

I dunno if it's PC, but perhaps consider changing to a wedge key?  Yeah....more work, but......

I'd make a pair os small discreet inlays to cover both ends of the pin.  I've seen longrifles that had inlays only over the lower barrel pin/wedge, and none on the upper holes.

 I would try the super glue first then if you are not satisfied go the inlay route.

That's a great idea!!  Besides, I've never had a mistake look so nice!!

I kinda like Gun Nut 73’s suggestion. You could even carve small petals around it to look like a tiny flower, similar to the inlays Wayne Watson did on the Mohican movie rifle.

Pretty sure its a dent. This isbthe result after the first night.just water no steam.
Thanks for all the great advice. Im pleased. With the result so far. Im going to try the steam but i think it raised enough that i wont mind sanding it a bit.

You are almost there.  Before you sand soak the area again and put a hot wet wash rag over the spot and steam.  Keep the iron moving as you do this.  I think more will raise.

Then dry and see what ya got.  Sand it any way as the grain will be raised.
