Assistance with identifying JR McQuaid percussion
« on: January 24, 2018, 06:23:03 PM »
I’m trying to figure this Rifle/shotgun out. I’ve not seen anything similar. It appears possibly a .36 and 12g combo. I’ve found minimal info on the maker and am curious if this would have been a piece commissioned by a customer or something produced en masse. Unfortunately I couldn’t figure out how to attach pictures.

You need to find a copy of "Gunmakers of Illinois " vol II by Curt Johnson. See page 305 -308. Lots of info & pics on James R McQuaid. most likely your man.
Born 1818 Clearfield County PA.  Worked in Canton IL from 1844-1856 , when he quit making guns due to bad health. Was in hardware until 1863. Then owned a grocery store. He died in Oakland California 1897.

Adding to AVIRC's comments, here is an abstract from The History of Fulton County, Illinois.

This forum is one of the few on which I can easily post photos, so if you e-mail an image to WGLOWE@TDS.NET, I'll TRY to post it here. Likewise, as a serious collector of percussion over under guns, I can PROBABLY offer you some comments on your gun

David, See my e-mail for the Belgian proof marks and other comments...... I'm glads you were able to post the images on this forum as well as sending to me
I believe that the gun is a nicely repurposed medium grade Belgian double barreled shotgun that McQuaid converted to a rifle/shotgun "cape gun" configuration by sleeving the one barrel with a rifled tube and adding sights. Photos of the bottom of the barrels removed from the stock and a full side view will help in verification. All-in-all, this seems to be a nice Americanized multi-purpose gun

David, the Belgian proof marks are nicely shown in your photos. Again, you've got a nice clean and solid Belgian double barrel nicely converted to a rifle shotgun combination by  James McQuaid

Dk1783. I just recently saw this post and was wondering if you still had the James R. McQuaid rifle and if you’d ever consider selling it. James McQuaid is my great, great, great, grandfather (maybe one more great), and I’d love to get a James R. McQuaid firearm for my father. If you'ld be interested in talking about it please let me know and I can give you my contact information.
Thanks
