old leather bag
« on: November 01, 2018, 07:36:59 AM »
I picked up (for cheap) an old leather shooting pouch. The leather is somewhat stiff and I wonder how to soften it up. I have colored it with some leather dye and it looks much better, but I'd like to make it more subtle......how would I go about doing this?

Baseball glove cream.

I had a ball glove that had 20 years of non use and dry leather making it useless.

I don't remember which exact product I got, I think it was a spray foam that soaked it, IIRC.

In any case, if you google "baseball glove cream", lots of hits will come up.

Neatsfoot oil is what baseball players use on their gloves. It is available at the big box stores. And mink oil will soften that leather also.

If you choose to use neats foot oil be sure it says “100% pure” and “oil”, not “compound”.  Compound has other nasty things like silicones that do more harm than good.
I also used good ol plain shaving cream to soften my baseball glove(s) during break in. Like Barbasol. Avoid those fancy brands.
Then maintain once a year or so with a light application of neats foot oil.
Hope this helps.  Others’ mileage may vary.
Regards.

Bought myself a good baseball glove at age 12 and rubbed in several applications of olive oil.  The glove is still nice and supple today even after 37 years in the Arizona desert.  The glove was bought in 1951.  So maybe olive oil is good for more than dipping bread.
