Brown Bess Fake !?
« on: November 04, 2018, 01:44:55 PM »
Hello, here is a question to the Brown Bess specialists saw this  one on a  german gun auction site. For me it looks like a india made Bess but never saw it with all the markings on it. Also the engravings looks so bad to me. The seller makes no exact information about the weapon no barrel length or prof marks and so on. He sells them as original English and also in the order of the owner. If it were an original, the price would be good, but I do not think so !

I would be glad to hear your opinion

Monty

Hi,
It is a fake.  The British stopped putting dates on the locks in 1764. The lettering and crown looks stamped not engraved.  The marks on the stock are too sharp and the wood does not look like walnut.  The markings on the barrel look like they were done with a Dremel tool they are so crudely done.  The flintcock is totally wrong.  Dragoon carbines have sling rails on the side plate side.  There is so much wrong with this gun and it is a really poorly done and amateurish fake.

Yes, Fake and Bl***y awful at that.
To add to Dave, and to not give too much away to would -be fakers, that trigger is of a type never seen on an anything, never mind a Brown Bess.

That "engraving using a vibrating pencil, or Dremel as Dave says, is as bad as it comes.

Monty,

Maybe let the auction -site know, (May be they do know already, but need a prompt!)

That's possibly one of the most ridiculous fakes I've ever seen.  It's comic-book bad.

Horrible fake.
Since we do not have that many gun auctions in Germany: Is it from the one
that starts today and lasts 2 or 3 days?
Kind regards from Germany, Chris
