finished Kibler SMR
« on: October 29, 2018, 06:12:57 PM »
Finally finished this with help and guidance from mentor Larry McCoy. A fascinating piece of wood, it came from the largest and hardest maple we ever dropped. Some of the mineral streaks turned a deep red after staining with tannic acid and iron nitrate. My fifth build, I plan to suspend building in hopes of gaining more time to shoot. I recently botched a shot at a pronghorn due to lack of practice. this rifle will soon be posted on 'items for sale'

Sweeny, darn good job on that rifle, and the wood is beautiful.
From looking at that tree chunk, you had to chisel an awful lot of wood away to find your stock.  Do you have enough for a few more stocks?  I really like figured wood such as you used.

Happy to see you finally finished that rifle. Having seen it when it came to you in the box, I am pleased to see how it finished out. I have the sister blank as you well know.. It is the heaviest piece of maple I have ever handled. Hope to shoot with you next spring.

Timbotide- I sanded the metal down to 600 grit, [beginning with 220] de-oiled all the metal then applied two coats of Perma blue and lightly knocked down with 0000 steel wool.

Regarding sanding and rasping ;D,the log was too fat for the mill so we blasted it with over one pound of FFF. it split beautifully down the center. Unfortunately, it was so full of blemishes, knots, cracks we only got a dozen blanks. all sold.

Better get going on that blank before that desert air reduces it to dust! Looking forward to seeing your finished product.

Have you used the Perma Blue on a flintlock before
And if so how durable is it?

I remember shaping this stock.  One of the hardest I've ever encountered...  You did a fantastic of assembly and finishing.  Great work.  Looks really nice!

Used it on two other flintlocks I have hunted with for four years [lots of wet weather] and it seems to endure quite well. But I cannot say beyond that experience. Others on this forum may have more experience/knowledge.
