Not Longknife but I think I know why he made the statement. Wire inlay is something I have never seen or even heard of on an original nor a contemporary mountain rifle. It would be similar to painting a longrifle candy apple red :)

Michael,
You made a good choice.  Jim has done a great job recreating the SMR that is super close to the original.  I would recommend you research the original rifle and look at the photo's for info concerning the patch box design and nose cap configuration.  Jerry Nobel's book "Notes on Southern Long Rifles Vol. 1" has photo's of the J. Whitson rifle on page 124 and 125 that will give you an idea of the patch box and nose cap as well as the rest of the rifle.
This rifle has been a favorite of mine for many years.

Im not interested in a nosecap but may co sider a simple banana style patch box, it really depends on the figure in the wood itself, i really dont want to cover up some fine figure if i dont have to.

I am going to guess but I think he is telling you inlays and wiring don't go with SMR's.....Take a look at pictures of them.  I cringed a bit when I read that as well.
Just trying to help.

- I thought Dennis' reply was even more easily understood. His rather demonstrative explanation of how the SMR would appear to people who are a might picky, was quite vivid. :o
