.400 ball-20/1000 patch with tracks mink oil all on top of 55 or 60 gr. of swiss 2f depending on which 40 cal. I'm shooting.

My best accuracy load using Hoppe's #9 Plus BP solvent for lube, was .398" pure lead ball and .0235" patch, with
65gr. 3F GOEX making 2,240fps. That load would shoot into 1/2" for 5 shots, at 50yards, benched - standard open sights, V and blade.

40 grains of fffg , .018 patch, .400 pure lead. shoots 1 inch high at 25 yds and dead nuts at 50 yds. oh yeah, spit patch. as you can see from these posts all rifles are a bit different. you will have to experiment to see what your gun likes (known as working up your load). Have fun with it and don't expect to do it in one visit to the range. It's a process.

.395 pure lead round balls, .015 pillow ticking pre-cut patches lubed with pure 100% neatsfoot oil with 10% pure beeswax. 40 grains 3F Goex, and of course shot through a proper flintlock.

.390 pure lead roundball that I molded myself, .015 pillow ticking liberally lubed with mink oil on one side, and 45 grains of Goex 3f for main charge and pan prime as well.

I have 2 40s an one likes 40 gns fffg an the other like 30gns fffg. Both shoot a 380 ball an a thick bear greased patch very well. Load very easy too

For squirrels and such a .395 rb, .018 patch, canola oil lube on top of 30 grains 3fg.
For turkeys a .395 rb, .018 patch, canola oil lube on top of 60 grains of 3fg.

I have a .40 I built with a Green Mountain 13/16" barrel, it likes everything I put in it. My heavy load is 60gr of 3F, a .395 ball wrapped in .015 ticking lubed with mink oil. My squirrel load is 30 gr of 3F, a .390 ball wrapped in a mink oiled .015 ticking patch. Both loads shoot a ragged hole at 50 yards.

Forty grains of 3F is my "everything" load and gives around 1700 fps. 60 grains gives 2140 fps. 30 grains seems to be perfect for little critters due to the accuracy and lower velocity of between 1300 fps and 1400 fps. I shoot a .390" ball, .024" canvas or .019"/.020" duck. My favorite lubes are Hoppes #9 BP Lube and Mink oil.

My .40 GM swamped 44” barrel likes 55 grains fff with ticking and a .395.

I have shot .390s, .395s and .400s in my GM, they all group the same. My serious BP competitor friend Bruce uses a .40 most of the time and only shoots .400s, most of the time you can cover his offhand 100 yard group (percussion) with a quarter on a good day.

45 grains of swiss 3f under a .017 patch fully loaded with GF#1 lube around a .392 ball. no between shot fouling control needed, one hole accuracy to at least 40 yards. i really like the .40 and will get another soon enuf.

StevenV, where does a guy get teflon pillow ticking? All the teflon coated patching I have seen is a tightly woven canvas type material.

At our club in Southeast Pa Teflon coated patching is the norm. Denim/Canvas or pillow ticking is coated with Teflon. One of the members sells it to anyone interested. It allows for a more lead and a tighter patch in the barrel. Thanks for that info StevenV on a source for the patching. I only use the stuff in my light bench gun and it produces the most accurate load/smallest group the gun is capable of.
