Pistol barrel question
« on: December 26, 2018, 02:54:46 AM »
I'm thinking about building a bear pistol with a 15' barrel. I have a .50 cal. 1 in 48 twist rifle barrel that I can cut down. I see that most pistols have a lot faster twist. Will the rifle barrel that I have be suitable for the pistol that I want to build? thanks Dan

Absolutely.  It will require a bit larger powder charge to stabilize the ball, but if it's a bear pistol, you might want a little hotter load.

I have a .53 cal pistol with about a 9"bl. and a 60"twist. It shoots exceptionally well with 55 to 60gr. 3F GOEX and a .526"ball. The bore is a tight .54, at about 533"bore.
It kicks like my 4" modern magnum revolver - plenty for bear, if hit properly.

Would it make more sense to sell the rifle barrel and buy a pistol barrel? Or is the barrel you have damaged or to short for anything else?

Dale, this barrel piece is only 22 inches long. The plan is to build this gun with parts I have laying around the shop . I'm sure a 15" barrel would be a custom order, probably more than I would want to spend on this project.

This one I made has a 15" swamped barrel made to order by Ed Rayl. Caliber 40, the twist is 1:21 as recommend by Rayl.

I thought that might be the case, TP.

The only others thoughts I have are 1) a pistol with a 15" barrel might be a bit muzzle heavy, and 2) is shooting a bear with a muzzle loading pistol something a sane man does?

Although the pistol will probably shoot OK with stouter loads than a lot of people typically use for target work with pistols. I’m betting it’s going to be seriously nose heavy. How big is the measurement of the barrel across the flats? This will bear greatly on the handling quality. Just giving you some food for thought. BJH

Beautiful Rolf, your work gives me inspiration . Yes I realize it will be a bit nose heavy but I was more concerned about accuracy. At this point I am committed, started on it yesterday. Many thanks to all who replied.... Dan
