Large Gusset Bag
« on: December 27, 2018, 07:56:34 PM »
I've made several bags from the T.C. Albert book but I'm wanting to dive into something a little different.  I ran into a bag that had a three inch or so gusset all the way around and then a three piece flap.  I wasn't crazy about the bag but after using it a couple times, it was like a drawer and very user friendly.  You open the top and everything is there neat and tidy in little straps all around the inside walls.  I'm in the process of making patterns for two bags with very large gussets.  The bag I'm referencing has the cheap looking sinew sewed on the outside and I think by sewing it on the outside, it is giving it stability to stay square.  I'd rather sew it together with the seam inside and add a welt.  Do you think this will work or will the gusset sag?  The three piece flap is also sewn on the outside with the cheap looking sinew. If I make a one piece flap and squash the gusset to close the bag, am I running into problems?  Anyone use a more square bag and have advice on the construction?  I can add some pictures when I get home tonight to try to show the bag I'm wanting to duplicate.

Thanks CCF.  You listed several great pictures that I'm working with.  That particular bag is square like I'm trying to duplicate but it is folded in a unique way.  I'm going to make these bags very similar.

Just be sure you match your gusset on both sides when sewing.  If you turn the gusset and sew from the inside it will stiffen the bag structure some.  However, if your top of gusset is wide then I think, you are defeating your purpose.  Adding a welt when sewn from the inside also adds some strength depending on what the welt is made of.  (When I say inside I assume you are trying to hide the stitching by sewing the bag inside out.)

Although rectangular or square bags look easy beware the 90* corners.  Your leather/fabric gusset and welt will crawl all over unless you glue it down before sewing and punching sewing holes.

Thanks for the info.  Here are some pictures.  I don’t know if it’s historical or not but the design is nice and open and very functional.  It easy to reach in and find everything.  It appears to be a kit or production bag.  I want to fancy it up a bit without the fake sinew and hide the stitching.

Not specific to your exact design but here’s some free advice.
Veering away from what you know and experimenting is always great. Life is boring if we don’t try new stuff right? But here’s where you can save yourself a little agony.
If you have a design in mind but aren’t sure if it will function, start combing through images of antique bags until you see a design or style that has at least some element of what you’re imagining. Don’t limit yourself to early/mid 19th century American hunting bags, look at 19th-20th century European bags too. Also, look at modern bags that have nothing to do with hunting. Even purses at Walmart or target have design concepts to them that have not changed dramatically for centuries. If your idea is feasible you will likely find it and have a better perspective on the reality of its form and function.
If you don’t find it, wrap your head around it the best you can and just try making it. If it sucks you got an education. If it works you are the man.

Thanks Eric.  I used your advice.   I think it’s going to be between a shotgun pouch, mid 19th Century pouch, the bag CCF was referencing and a purse Macy’s has for sale.  The flap has me concerned but I think I can make it work.  I normally go with copying items but I’m going after something that is comfortable and functional to me.   They will be unique for sure.

Here is my attempt so far at the large gussetted bag.  It looks like it’s going to work.  I had to order the buckle and still need to measure the guy I’m building it for the strap.  The sheath is from the CCF bag posted and I’m wanting to do the flap like the same bag but I need more mohagany dye.

Looks plenty roomy, and it looks like there’s a place for everything you might want to carry. I’d say she’s coming along nicely!

That is coming aoong quite nicely, will be a good user when finished. What leather are you using for this? Alomost looks like the good russet I used as a kid helping dad fix headstalls and light harness parts.

It could be 2” shorter all the way around and I think the Gusset could taper a bit and still accomplish what I was after.   But,  who can complain about anything being too big?   :o   I think a supersized value meal will fit comfortably.  A quart of milk is snug.

The leather is 3-5 oz vegetable tanned.  I purchased a side at Tandy Leather while in Arizona a few months ago.  My guess is that it is more on the 3-4 Oz.  I tried going through the pile to pick the more pliable leather.

Vet, considering the great advice you got from Sligo, take a deep breath and realize you are on the tip of the iceberg.   Good find, nice work.  Keep it up

Nice job.  How did you decide to put the "patch knife" on the side....  Just asking.....

Thanks. It has a long way to go.  I got the idea from a bag that CCF posted that was with a Baxter Bean rifle.  The original appears to have two knife sheaths. I have a buddy who is a Bean and is on the  waiting list for an extra fancy maple Kibler rifle.  He said he needed a bag to go with the new rifle but wanted it to be wide open like his current bag,  the one above but like the Baxter Bean Rifle bag.  I need to make the flap double layered and make the edges jagged.  He wants a wide leather strap,  so it will have an 1 1/2 or 1 3/4 strap with a brass buckle.  I’ve always copied original things as closely as I could.  This time I figured I’d cram both bags into one and add my own flavor.

Looks like a guy could get a pair of lineman's pliers and a couple of screwdrivers in there... ;)

All joking aside... Very nice work.

Here it is finished.  I tried taking make it a certain design and add some of the features of the Baxter Bean rifle bag and then I threw in welts and stuff.  As with everything in this hobby,  I learned a bunch.  Thanks everyone for the advice,  it was very much appreciated.

Mike, I like it. It looks very user friendly, and should hold everything ya need for a decent days shooting. I really like the color, too!
