 I find the throat gets in the way/clogged and it's hard to hold the right angle. I'm sure it is all in what you get used to, I don't like to used them on wood either, preferring the Draw knife.

Yep, spokeshave is not my tool of choice on horn.  I made a dainty drawknife that I use for such work.
