20 ga Fowler

Should be finished with this one in time for turkey season. 20 gauge cylinder bore. I’m undecided on stain & finish. Before, all I used was a NGR alcohol based stain and boiled linseed oil. Any suggestions? Thanks, Jerry

I've been using Kibler's stuff Tanic acid followed by his Ferric Nitrate. Here's one below that I did with that stuff. I seem to be always experimenting. I get bored and have to change things up.

if you've never done acid type stains that require heat, best do some testing first on scrap wood.

as to clear coats, the spectrum runs from oils that may never cure to 'plastics' (permalyn, etc). 

the bottom line is that whatever you've not had experience with before should first be scrap tested.

On the other hand, I have never scrap tested anything. Of course as I have said before, I live pretty close to the edge.

My preference in nitric and linseed oil, (cut with gum spirits of turpentine)

Very easy and forgiving finish.

I don't test anything either.  (for better or worse, LOL!)

I've always used aqua fortis followed by an oil-based varnish.  For a turkey getter (I'm assuming Spring showers), Gary Brumfield liked beeswax.  He stained the stock, applied diluted linseed oil, then softened beeswax and polished it in with his hand.  He described it as almost weatherproof.
