Ash stocked Southern Mountain Rifle finished

Here is one I finished today.  Ash stock with tannic acid, iron nitrate, Chambers oil and lastly Bri Wax.  42" long - swamped octagon, 50 caliber Rice Southern Classic barrel with square bottom rifling, rust finished.  Chambers Mountain lock, Davis #4 trigger and brass mounts.  Partial butt plate.

I'd say that ash is fully as beautiful as maple.

It has a good pattern for being "plain sawn".  It was a little bit of a challenge as wood wanted to lift in front of the gouge/inlet tool to follow the grain, so I had to watch carefully.  It does have a little bit of birds eye pattern, but it does not stand out as well as maple.  I have an Ash stocked Bedford planned for the future that should be interesting.

That rifle looks like it has a lot of Lafayette County influence, some like that come out of the Mayo area I hear. Then again, it could be part of the Chiefland school with a hint of Cross City.

Well, it is actually a Lafayette.  I just thought that most would not recognize the small variances.  Good eye.   ::)

Awesome!! As a newcomer I was thinking it also has hints of Columbia :)
