Just Finished (almost) a double bag for myself
« on: June 08, 2009, 03:41:09 AM »
A bit different treatment for the flap on this double bag I'm claiming for my ownself.  The flap was tooled similar to 'shell carvings' alot of the famous colonial cabinetmakers in the northeast used on their furniture.  I've been know to carve a few of mine and thought I'd bring this to a piece of leather.  The bag(s) are of 4oz veg tan while the strapping and flap are of 5-6 oz veg tan.  While the bag and flap is dyed a combination of medium/dark brown (trying to exhibit some age) I decided to use black on the welting and entry trim to give a different look.  Overall the bag is approx 7 7/8 square to accommodate my fat mitt getting in the bag without getting hung up.

Nice bag Gary. Like the welt contrast.
I made a few shell flapped bags back in the early '90's after the tang carving and engraving designs on early English fowling guns.
You have inspired me to put one on the list of future projects.

Thanks all to the nice compliments now I best see about putting some new 'accouterments' in the bag.  And yes Joey, I did have a mind to get a fowler to go with it   ;).  I think I'll wait for the Big Event the end of July to spring that one on my CFO  ;D.

A question, Gary. How did you lay out those nice, smooth lines on the flap? What did you cut them with? I am getting ready to cut some leather for a pouch and that shell flap inspired me. Mind if I blatantly plagiarize your design?

Best,

Canute

Canute, I certainly don't mind.  As far as what is used to 'cut' the lines, I used a Gomph single edge creaser, or tickler.  After laying out the design on my paper pattern using a couple of french curves I transferred to the leather flap once I was happy with the spacing.  I had made small marks on the french curves to use as an aid in aligning the curves on the flap and then used their edges as a guide to use the creaser.

Gary, When most CFO's get a new purse they almost certainly HAVE to have other accessories to match. I see no difference between a fowler and that scenario! Best of luck and again a nice bag. Joey.

Gary, that bag is absolutely inspired!

Sparkylock,

I almost spit coffee onto the computer screen whilst laughing, when I read your post as it really hit home.

Back in the early to mid 80's, Navy Arms had just come back out with their 1863 Springfield Rifled Musket and this time with a one piece american black walnut stock.  Unfortunately, even though we were selling them at dealer price at the North South Skirmish Association Spring National Championships, the cost was $ 450.00 while the 1853 Navy Arms/Euro Arms Enfields were going for about $ 285.00.

One gentleman came up in a Confederate Uniform and asked to look at it and of course I took it off the wall and handed it to him.  After looking at it with lust, he just sort of sighed and said, "Unfortunately my wife won't let me buy it."  I remarked, "Yes, it is a LOT more money than the Enfield."   He replied," No that's not it.  I'm not bragging but the wife and I are both computer specialists and we don't have any children so money is not the problem.  She just won't let me have another rifled musket."

So we did some brain storming and tried to come up with every reason in the world to get her to OK the purchase of the gun.  Unfortunately, virtually everything we came up with had already been tried by him.  Finally he said, "I recently bought a Union Uniform to occasionally "galvanize" when there aren't enough Federal Reenactors at an event and this rifle would have been great to use for that."  That's when it hit me!  I told him we were looking at it like men and that didn't make sense to her.  I suggested that when a Lady buys a new dress, she has to have shoes, purse, jewelry, etc. to go along with it and try to explain it that way.  He looked at me like I was a bit off, but again I suggested he try it as everything else hadn't worked.

He came back about four hours later and just pointed to the rifle on the wall and began counting out hundred dolllar bills whilst just shaking his head and not saying a word.  I recognized him of course and said, "If it isn't too personal, I just HAVE to ask how you got your wife to go along with buying this rifle."  He grinned and told me he had gone over every other argument with her and she had said a FLAT "NO."  He walked over to the fire so as not to start a big ruckus and kicked a piece of wood next to the fire.  Even with wearing brogans, he chuckled while saying he had almost broke a toe.  So he sat down and took a long while to drink a cup of coffee and not let on he had almost broke a toe.  Then he remembered what I had said and decided "Why not try it as everything else had failed?"  So after he explained he wanted it for the Federal Uniform, her attitude did an immediate about face.  She said, "OH, you want to accessorize your outfit ?!  OK, you can go buy the gun."

We  both laughed for about five minutes straight after that and I can't tell you how many times I've suggested that story wth others.  Surprisingly, it has actually worked a few other times.  Grin.
