How to tell who made the barrel

Please tell me and maybe post some barrel makers marks.  When I find a flintlock on the gun store rack how can I tell who the barrel make is and stalker/maker.   How do I tell a Getz from a Rice, ….

Most contemporary barrels have the breechplug indexed so the makers mark is on the bottom flat of the barrel at the breech. You would have to pull the barrel to see who made it.

And, generally on that bottom barrel flat you'll find the barrel makers name in full or nothing at all. If the gunstocker's name isn't signed on top of the barrel there is a small chance it may be on the bottom flat or not signed anywhere on the gun. There are probably more non signed guns out there than there are signed guns, especially at the low end. Most gunmakers dabble at this as a hobby and many can't engrave.

Check the butt plate....lol. 



I'm a hobby builder.... But I think I may start initial or signing and # and dating the inside of the buttplates.....with sharpie of course....cause like Mike said, I can't engrave.  Lol.    If for nothing else, my own memories.   But, I can't be the only hobby builder to think of that.

All I have are letter stamps and make a crude note on the bottom flat of the barrel about who made the gun where and when.

The first most important thing to ascertain about a used gun (especially one for sale in a modern gunshop) is whether or not there's a charge in the bbl.  Then the condition of the rifling and then the twist rate.

If it passes those, then it might be interesting to know who made it, but not pivotal to the value of the gun in my estimation.

Hello, if I remember correctly Getz barrel are stamp just wirth a G in a square and Rice ones with the full name Rice.  I'm just a bit lazy otherwise I would expand and look it up on my rifles.

I may be wrong but I thought my several Getz barrels had the Getz name spelled out.

I think someone filed the name off my Getz barrel. Too bad to as it was made by Don.

Of the one's I have on hand:

Rice has an "R" with the front leg extended and swooping up.

Rayl has "RAYL" in block letters, very small

Green Mountain has a broken circle logo and the caliber.

My Getz barrel is stamped
GETZ
BEAVERTOWN PA

But the stamping is faint.  The browning nearly obscures it.  It had a serial number that was scribed with an electric pen, but I can't see it anymore.

Old Getz barrels were scratched with an electric 'engraver' with their name, the serial number of the barrel, and the calibre.  I confess to filing all that off when I used those barrels in a build.  New Getz barrels have a stamp as described above on the left side angle flat near the plug.

Yes a  G   for Getz . Rice has a R same spot and found Colerain marks with a C
