David,

Thanks....I understand now.  Good idea with the soldered sole.

Hi,
The trigger guard came out nicely as well.

I have this down to a science.  A couple of details to add - bone charcoal does make a difference. I had a mix of bone and wood and when I did the first run for the trigger guard, the result had unblued spots.  I believe it was where coarser wood charcoal allowed air to remain.  Consequently, I layer the bottom of the box with wood charcoal, then a layer of bone, then lay in the part and cover with bone charcoal.  Finally I fill the rest with wood charcoal and seal the top with aluminum foils.  The finer bone charcoal surrounding the part likely prevents trapped air from spoiling the finish.  The charcoal is reusable at least as filler.

Thank you for the update Dave. What do you use for a container?

Nicely done Dave.  It looks great on the gun!  Your bluing techniques should be under "Tutorials" for future reference.

I agree this needs to be moved to a tutorial.  Many blotchy and mottled attempts by many of us and Dave has uncovered some help for all thru judicious trial.
