Sydney: I have a recipe (just found it again today) for a wonderful browning solution. Give me a call, and I'll pass it on. We should make up a couple litres of the stuff with combined ingredients. I used it for years until I ran out, and it always gave a wonderful fine grained brown. Recipe came from an old gunsmith from Marysville, BC.
