Who was Elisha Bull? Rifle photos added
« on: March 21, 2019, 09:00:46 PM »
I just finished building a rifle in the style of Elisha Bull, but while researching the rifle I became confused as to just which Elisha Bull was the gunmaker. It seems that every generation in the Bull family had 10 or 12 kids and they named all of them after existing family members. This resulted in cousins, uncles, etc, all with the same name. I see several Elisha names in the pedigree.

Am I wrong in thinking Elisha Bull Sr. (1790-1873) the brother of John Valentine Bull (1777-1840) was the gunmaker who served in the war of 1812 (listed as a gunsmith in Capt. Vances GO TN Militia) and was the maker of the double grease hole rifle?

How about the Elisha Bull rifle pictured on page 94 of Whisker's, Gunsmiths of TN?

How about Pistol #2 on page 51 of Pierce's, Kentucky Rifles of The Great Smoky Mountains?

Were these guns all made by the same maker? And, do I have the right Elisha Bull?

;) ;)... You are correct on the kinship of the two as brothers,... Jerry Noble has done great research on them and has recorded in Volume 1 of his "Notes on Southern Long Rifles" series,... Volume 2 also has several photos,.... Wayne Elliott, Jim Parker, Arnie Dowd, and Gerald Neaves hopefully will report in on this,.... they probably have handled more rifles of the Bull family than anyone other than the Bulls themselves,... !!! ... regards,.....  ;D ;D ;D...  Great looking rifle,... !!! ... beautiful wood & profile,... things I would change on next  Bull build,.... they used a distinctive sideplate most of the time,... usually used a diamond shaped cheek-rest inlay,... usually had upper East Tn profile triggers, (Ross Dillon makes a perfect profile triggers),..your Trigger-guard and butt-plate are perfect,... E. Bull did  that fancy file work on the heel of his butt-plates,... !!... Great build,... give us some specs,... !!! ...

I like it! Nice looking maple. I especially like your lock panels, wrist area, and how it transitions into the comb. Nice overall appearance from a blank. You should be proud. How many rifles have you built? Just curious. Are you planning on using it to hunt with?

My thanks to all who have replied. I hoped to get some constructive criticism to help advance my building skills. Thank you.

C C Fiddler - I plan to call Jerry Noble. Thanks.

Mike Brooks - Thank you! Your reply made my day!

James T - This is my 6th build, 3 from a blank. And yes, I'll be squirrel hunting with it this fall.

Nice looking gun, If you want to see some actual Bull rifles there are usually several at the Tennessee Kentucky Longrifle show in Knoxville, TN.  It would also be an opportunity to talk to Jim Parker, Wayne Elliott, Dana (Cades Cove Fiddler) and other knowledgable individuals.  TH show is the April 12-13.  I learned a lot which helped in building my Bull rifle.

Good looking rifle!
I like that guard.  Is it a casting?
