To bevel or not to bevel?

Should I file a bevel into the lockplate of my Chambers early Ketland? I was originally going to inlet it flush with the wood until my Dad pointed out that he thought I ought to have a bevel. I looked at a few pictures online and it looks like some builders do put a bevel on their locks. Which is more historically correct?

By bevel are you referring to a slight draft to the edge of the plate or an actual bevel that you inlet to the bevels depth on the lock panel?

The answer is fairly short and simple.  Make sure you have draft on the part of the lock that fits into the wood and a bevel on the part that is proud of the wood.

The old locks I see have a bevel on them and I think they l0ook better.

This thread prompts another question. Those of you who have used a  Chambers'  Dale Johnson lock, did you file a bevel? I did because of the non-descript corner which puzzled me as to how deep to inlet....Fred
