metal finishing?
« on: April 05, 2019, 03:16:07 AM »
Looking for info , maybe a tutorial, on how to finish the steel parts on my rifle.  I have done all the lueing, browning and even some severe distressed rust finishes.
Just want to gray, or dull the barrel, lock and other parts?

The way I get a " French Grey" on metal parts is to first rust blue the parts and after they have been rust blued I wipe the blue off with a rag saturated with Naval jelly.

Below are a couple of photos of a Tulle I used the above method on.

I used Kibler's https://kiblerslongrifles.com/collections/finishing-supplies/products/patina-solution?variant=46538941187 Patina Solution on this pistol. The Solution was one of the easiest methods to apply and the finish came out great.

I had got the same finish as Davemuzz on my Kibler colonial using Jim's finish as well.

Phosphoric acid will give the same look as pictured a lot easier. Just rub a few coat on with steel wool and wipe off-your done.

David Rase, I like the look of your French grey, how does it hold up in use?

Dave R. Because the finish is actually etched in the metal during the rusting process it tends to be a pretty durable finish.  The finish does have a tendency to stain if the gun is not cleaned and wiped down with oil or paste wax in a timely manner after use.  As long as I keep things clean after shooting I have not had any issues.
