This is not a gun I would have choose to do silver mounts on. Just me of course, I'm sure everyone else will love it. Your contemporary tastes mix with my traditional tastes like oil and water. :P

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Mike I knew you would love it.... I got the English Fowler waxes poured in sterling as well. I will start that walnut plank 20 gauge officers Fusel after the new year. At least it will be accurate in silver. Just having fun with Jim’s Colonial. Oil and water huh? Naaaa I still appreciate all you contribute, I’ll make sure I put you on the buyers list when it’s done.....  ;D

Great work Jon!  I am always humbled and inspired by the guns I see on this site. I just don't think I'll live long enough to acquire half the skill I see exhibited here.

Ha - Thanks guys - Here is my "Opti-Selfi" Having fun with this build - a Kibler Colonial is a great platform to build without any carving or engraving, or as Mike would say - very over the top Contemporary!!!

After a slight distraction, I'm back at this project, I used Dye this time, a base coat of TransTint Honey Amber and then a coat of Dark Vintage Maple. No Iron Nitrate or any other base. First image is dry, the other two were sprayed with water to see how the colors would look. I now have to sand back the Dark Vintage Maple to high-lite the carving, I will use a type of Bone Black to shade and shadow the carvings and then finish with a flat or eggshell luster finish. The Sterling side plate looks good with the contrast. Should have the final finish by weeks end.

Jon,

It's hard to believe it was only about a year and a half ago when you came to my shop to get some advise on building a flintlock rifle.

Now, who's  teaching who ???    Great work, looking forward to our next visit.

Thanks Ed - Here is the oil coated final in the sunlight - Jim gave me a cool piece of Maple, curl was in and out, but I like it with the honey brown color.... Now just finishing the draw filing and some details, should be done this week -

Finished the engraving and now assembly, the front sight is German Silver.... I took these with my cellphone, so they are not great, but I will take final images of the finished rifle this weekend and post. As always, feedback most welcome, Jon

Sorry for the light and "bright on bright" images.....

Took some final images of this kit - a lot of fun, a learning curve on carving and engraving and I'll test it in a week or so at the range. Thanks all who followed, and watched the MOP inlay thread as well. I'm off this Summer - check back in after the Thanksgiving Holidays. Cheers to all...

Jon

That looks amazing ! Great job. If only I could do the fancy engraving and carving. Perhaps one day. For now my rifles will be plain and no comparison to fine work like that!!
