Gun makers from Elmira Illinois?
« on: May 03, 2019, 10:57:25 PM »
I hope Curt J. Might see this.
I was wondering if there were any
Gunsmiths located in Elmira Illinois.
I just picked up a light plains rifle I believe
Was made there. It’s marked “Elmira”.
I can’t make out the makers mark. I Found it a few
counties east of Elmira and believe it’s
An Illinois piece.Thanks in advance
TC

The lock plate is brass. Only it’s
Actually brazed right on top of an older
Plate underneath it. This gun saw a lot
Of work a long time ago by the looks
Of it. Can’t yet make out the touch mark.

Hello Tim,
I don't have any information on anyone making guns in Elmira, Illinois, which is not very far from me. Stark County is appropriately named, when it comes to gunsmiths or most other things. Very rural, with no large communities.  The population, even today, is probably well under 10,000. I would love to believe that rifle was made in Elmira, Illinois, but I don't.

Tim,
I think that's a sweet name for a rifle.  Don't fight it, just go with it.

It seems like New York gunsmiths more often than others stamped their city names on the barrels of their rifles...but obviously others did so as well. It would be nice to see a little more of the rifle's architecture, cheekpiece, rear side facing with side plate, tang, etc....might be able to locate rifle a little better.  Shelby Gallien
