Recently completed my Moravian Fowler found on pg. 137 of Moravian Gunmaking #1 and in Grinslades Fowlers on pg.206(Kentucky fowler #7). I really liked the architecture on this piece, seems to have a lot of early Lehigh influence. A few first time endeavors for me on this gun - first time I hand inlet a barrel & RR channel, & my first go at making thimbles from sheet. My engraving and carving are works in progress, especially my borders on the engraving, but I don't think the turkeys will care.

Barrel - 16 ga Rayl - 42"
Lock - Chambers gunmakers lock
Buttplate - Peter Allen #238(I think - but I filed the snot out of it)
TG - Modified Reaves Hudson Valley fowler
sideplate, toeplate, thimbles, nosecap, inlays from sheet
trigger from 1/8" plate
rear sight - RR spike ala Curtis

I'd like to give shout out to Mark Wheland for answering the many questions I had regarding some of the details as he has built a few of these. Thanks Mark.

I really like this firearm. I'm not familiar with the gun that inspired you; whether the carving is copied or not, but it is a wonderful design, and nicely executed. You will enjoy this piece (or someone will) for years to come. Great work!

Great job on the fowler Mark! We don't see many guns such as this, especially in fowlers - glad to see you took the path of building what personally inspired you. Also worthy usage of that underrated icon, the RR spike!

Beautiful, we'll executed piece. Any craftsman should be proud of a piece like that.
Can you explain the Lehigh influence you describe? Carving style, and maybe a little in the wrist? Hard to see without having it in front of you.

Thanks guys for all your replies. I know I've said this before, but the knowledge and experience one can take away from this group really does speed up the learning curve.

Taylor - I wish I could take credit for the carving design, but it is mostly copied from the original. I did do the engraving designs on the lock, toe plate and triggerguard. The TP & TG are my attempt at dogwood flowers which are in bloom during spring turkey here.

Dane - The Lehigh characteristics are very subtle. Soft diamond wrist, very slight curve on the comb line and toe line, open nosecap.

Dave - Yes, I will be bringing it to Dixon's, along with another piece I should have done by this weekend. Hopefully I'll get some pics of that up soon. Look forward to seeing you all again.

Mike - I wish I would have known about your trigger guard, would have saved me some work for sure. I'll have to send you a PM before I start anymore of these Moravian/Christian's Spring guns.
