British Gorget
« on: August 01, 2019, 11:33:56 AM »
I lucked into this gorget a little while ago. It's hallmarks indicate sterling silver made in London in 1773. Still working on trying to make out the maker's mark, which is quite worn. The 72nd Regiment is, in my opinion, likely the Royal Manchester Volunteers. Raised in 1777, and disbanded in 1783, the Regiment never set foot on American soil, but did defend the Rock of Gibraltar from the French and Spanish when they laid siege to the fortress after entering the war on America's side.

How about a picture of the back...sounds almost as interesting as the front.

Here's the back, where the planishing can be clearly seen, and here are the hallmarks.

Hi,
I wonder if the makers mark is for John Bennett who was a hilt and haft maker in London at that time.

I imagine this is the maker's mark; I have been trying to enhance the image's contrast to the point that I might be able to make something out, which is what I did for the other marks. Perhaps fresh eyes will spot something I did not. Smart Dog, I will look up John Bennett, and see if anything jumps out at me.
