Hampshire County Halfstock

  I believe this is the only HC rifle I have seen that has an iron trigger guard.  Many HC rifle have capboxes  under the cheek piece, but not many have finials.  The other three rifles I seen made by Dayton also has  finials on the capbox & none are the same.  This rifle is in exc cond & the last owner was shooting it.  Signed R S D in script.  Roland Savage Dayton died in 1900, so this could be  late one.  He is listed as a gunsmith in the 1850 census and his brother is listed as a blacksmith. I wonder if Oliver might of made the trigger guard.  Roland was a Methodist preacher & his obituary states he preached over 6000 sermons, but no mention of rifles built.

Yeah, every now and again a maker over here does something unique,LOL.   A Kline sold a few years ago with bird heads on the cap box finials. & I think Homerifle has a tracing of one with an eagle head.

First gun I've seen with a patch box on each side of the stock!

I can not see it clearly by the picture....
Is the upper sideplate of the left side patchbox narrower than the other or it
is kind of "overlapped" by the cheekpiece, i.e. inlet in the wood somehow?

If you click the picture you can get a larger clearer view ( at least on my computer you can). The upper side plate is bent into an angle & is tight up against the cheekpiece.  Yes narrower. Not inlet under it.

I wonder if the second patch box was added after the rifle was finished. I base that on the incised line running pharrell to the box and in places the box seems to actually cover the line.

I am sure he did it during the build, not sure at what point. Here is another capbox he did on another one  of his signed rifles. His capboxes were always constructed the same except the finials on them was always different.
