Old powder horn

This is an old powder horn I acquired recently from a Delaware pawn shop.  It looks like a Pennsylvania horn to me, but I welcome your thoughts. Plug appears to be a hardwood, and it's quite translucent when held to light.

Possibly, but that turned plug is very distinct on many North Carolina and Tennessee horns; you might want to look through Jay Hopkins horn book as well as Bill Ivey's book on NC longrifles.

Very nice find.  Looks “beehive” style to me and possibly more Southern as noted by Bruce.

My thanks to you all, especially Bruce. I always welcome book referrals.  The idea that it might be southern in origin is pretty exciting.

My first thought on seeing it was North Carolina due to that beehive base.  Pretty horn.   God Bless,  Marc

In general, were those plugs hollowed out so it would hold more powder, or were they solid??

Tim Crosby will know for sure.
I believe they were hollowed to hold powder as well as making the horn lighter and better balanced.
I am no expert though.
