Back in the 70's I got to know a fellow in Hoskins, Oregon (he turned out to be a distant cousin) who had and original J&S Hawkin rifle that belonged to his ancestor. It had a grease hole in the stock with what looked like tallow in it. I don't know what became of the rifle after he died. He had said that one of the serious Hawkin collectors of the era had contacted him a few times about buying the rifle.
