how to hold pipes

somewhere i read a post of how to make a tool that holds ramrod pipes for fileing
anyone remember it ?

Don’t remember that one.

I have a couple large rat tail files. They are tapered of course and I slide the thimble on till it’s tight with a twist. Clamp the file in a vise and go at it.

I think ACER had made a tool to hold the pipes - have a look in the tool section for pictures and write-up .

I use a piece of cut of ram rod one size larger than the pipe, tapered until the pipe slips up onto the tapered portion of the rod. Drive the pipe up onto the rod just a tad more until it become tight. You can then place it in you vice to do the filing. Just rotate the whole works in the vice until you get all of your filing done.

David, That mirrors the old way bike handlebar cranes were held into the steering head.  Leave it to your ingenious brain to come up with a great use on longrifles.  Well done sir.   God Bless,   Marc

I'd have never even thought of that.  I've always just clamped the tenon in the vise.   ;)  But, I'm not engraving them, and I'm sure they can use the support inside while engraving.

Dave's tool is a great idea!

For years I have been using a wooden dowel of the appropriate diameter with a saw cut extending several inches down the center of the dowel.  I slip the ramrod pipe on the dowel and tap a slender wooden wedge into the end of the dowel.  The wedge expands the dowel and holds the ramrod pipe.

Just a slightly different way to do the job.
