.54 Smoothbore Barrel Weight

For the gunsmiths. I have only built 20 gauge smoothbores. I would like to know if it’s possible to build a .54 smoothbore with the finished weight being under 8#? Seems like most barrel makers haveA, B, C, and D weight barrels and not taking into consideration caliber. Only focusing on outside
profile. If I’m not correct about this, please let me know. I would really like a .54 smoothbore fowler, but weight is a factor. Thanks.

Call Bobby Hoyt.  Makes a great smoothie barrel in the fashion of old original barrels.  Tell him what you want to accomplish, and he'll build you one, at a great price.

I can make them slightly under 6lbs with a custom profile.

I second the suggestion to contact Robert Hoyt.  He made the barrels for my doublegun with a wall thickness of .075 at the muzzle.  The individual 34' long barrels were right at 3 pounds each.  As it turned out that is too heavy for a doublegun but would be fine for a single barrel gun.

WOW  :o  that's light for a 34 foot barrel, John.  Were they made from Unobtainium?
You could shorten them some to reduce the weight.

just kidding - I know it was a typo, but 28" to 30" for a double would be handier. I do not
know what barrel length is proper for a flinter, but cap-locks came in shorter and longer
lengths.
F of the A West notes one such SxS  at St. Louis that had 48" tubes. The Englishman in the
contest had a SxS with 28", I believe, in 14 bore. Both cap guns.
